Fr. Ignacio (Daniel) Read of the Immaculate Conception was one of nine children born to Edwin and Helen (nee McGee) on April 10, 1931, in Seattle, Washington. Although he was baptized as Daniel Doonan Read, he was inspired by St. Ignatius of Antioch, bishop and martyr, and chose the name Ignacio as his religious name. Father made his profession of religious vows on October 7, 1949, and was ordained to the priesthood on December 22, 1956, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC.
His early priestly ministries found him serving at the Carmelite Novitiate in Brookline, Massachusetts and, as Assistant Parish Priest at St. Florian Parish, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
He came to the Philippines on April 14, 1963, in the company of Discalced Carmelite Friars from the Washington Province to work for the mission in the Prelature of Infanta. After his mission work in the ecclesiastical territories of the prelature and reaching places like Maria Aurora, Bordeos, Casiguran, Baler, and Polilio Island; he was assigned as formator at the St. Joseph the Worker Postulancy House in Jaro, Iloilo City and Holy Family Novitiate House in Tugbok, Davao City. Holding a licentiate degree in spiritual theology, he taught spirituality as elective seminar module style at the Maryhill School of Theology in Quezon City and as formation module style to the seminarians of the Regional Theological Seminary in Davo City. Aside from these functions, he was also a sought-after spiritual director, retreat master, and confessor. His last assignments were at the St. John of the Cross Monastery House of Studies, the OCD Scholasticate House in New Manila, Quezon City and as formator for the triennium 2014-2016. An expert on St. John of the Cross, Fr. Igue offered input to novices during the last years before his death.
Fr. Ignacio (Igue) Read died on November 25, 2016. From November 26th to the 29th, four Wake Masses were celebrated in the Memorial Chapel of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. All four Wake Masses were filled with fellow Carmelites, priests, religious Sisters, friends and parishioners who all new and loved Fr. Igue. Each Mass was very solemn with liturgical singing and moving homilies which were all the personal and intimate experiences and encounters of the presiding three priests and Archbishop Tria Tirona, O.C.D. All the participants were treated to a five-course hot and delicious catered dinner. During those four days, friends were coming and going, some staying until 10:00 at night. This is how his many Filipino friends journeyed with him!
At 9:00AM on November 30, the Solemn Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated, accompanied by dozens of concelebrants, numerous religious Sisters, Mt. Carmel parishioners and many many friends coming from the various parishes where Fr. Igue was assigned throughout his 54 years of faithful missionary ministry. An inspiring and touching homily was given by one of Fr. Igue’s former novices. The liturgical celebration was concluded with the final incensing and blessing of “our brother”, Fr. Igue. A large procession of friends accompanied Fr. Igue to his final resting place in Loyola Memorial Park, Quezon City. May Fr. Igue rest in eternal union with Our Lord whom Fr. Igue loved and for whom he gave his whole life.
