Fr. Emmanuel (John) Sullivan of the Mother of God was born on December 24, 1926, in Boston, Massachusetts to parents John and Grace (nee Lennon) Sullivan. On September 7, 1945, he was clothed in the Carmelite habit and made his profession on September 8, 1946. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 20, 1952.

During his priestly ministry, Fr. Emmanuel taught and influenced many as a philosophy professor at Boston College, Boston, Massachusetts. He was also remembered for his service to the Institute of Carmelite Studies as a contributor of articles to its publications as well as its treasurer. 

Fr. Emmanuel died on April 27, 2009, and is buried at Holy Hood Cemetery in Brookline, Massachusetts.
