Fr. Dominic (Thomas Aquinas) Scheerer of the Holy Rosary was born on October 19, 1922 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was the ninth of ten children born to parents Louis and Gertrude (nee Beisel) Scheerer. He was clothed in the Carmelite habit on September 30, 1940; made his simple profession on October 1, 1941, his solemn profession on October 1, 1943, and was ordained to the priesthood June 10, 1947.
One year after his ordination, Fr. Dominic was sent to the province’s new mission in the Philippines. For the next 30 years, he served God by preaching the Gospel, traveling sometime impassable roads to baptize, to marry and to bury the faithful. He served as parish priest in Burdeos, Quezon (1950-1952); Infanta, Quezon (1952-1957); Palanan, Isabela (1957-1959); Baler, Quezon (1966-1973) and Maria Aurora, Quezon (1973-1979). He also served two terms as Delegate to the Provincial.
Fr. Dom returned to the United States in the late 1970s and continued ministries in Peterborough, New Hampshire; the Shrine of Mary Help of Christians, Hubertus, Wisconsin; and St. Florian Parish, West Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he dedicated himself to parish ministry, as prior at Sacred Heart Monastery and as chaplain of Mitchell Manor Nursing Home.
Fr. Dominic was born to eternal life on February 10, 2004, and is buried at the Carmelite Cemetery in Hubertus, Wisconsin.
