Br. Dermot (Thomas) Conlon of the Annunciation was born September 16, 1923 in Manchester, Massachusetts to parents Dennis and Catherine (nee Gallagher) Conlon. During World War II, he served with the United States Army Air Corps. On April 15, 1954, Br. Dermot made his profession as a Carmelite in Brookline, Massachusetts. His lifelong ministries included seven years as director of the Mount Carmel Bookstore in Washington, DC. He spent seventeen years working in collaboration with the Franciscans, serving the Navajo Nation in Fort Defiance, Arizona and other native tribes throughout Arizona and New Mexico. His person-to-person alcoholic ministry walked many through the Twelve Steps of Recovery. Brother also wrote the English concordance of the collected works of St. John of the Cross, completing it after twenty-three years. His retreat and concordance work for the Carmelite order took him to many parts of the world. Br. Dermot died on December 15, 1989 in Worcester, Massachusetts.
